Dying of fright – the Voodoo Death phenomenon

Yes, you can die of fright!

This phenomenon, sometimes referred to as Voodoo Death, occurs when fear induces the release of huge quantities stress hormones (catecholamines).

Small increases in the levels of these hormone leads to the “fight or flight” response, including an increase in heart rate, those “butterflies in your stomach” you feel when anxious.

However, a massive excess of these hormones can overwhelm the heart’s conduction system and lead to a fatal cardiac arrhythmia.

Death by fright. Voodoo Dolls.  All sounds crazy, right?

Actually, it isn’t:

So, next time you get “Scared to Death” try not to take it too literally.
